Rosacea: Facing a Facial Problem

Facial Problem From Rosacea

Rosacea is sometimes called acne rosacea. It is a type of skin irritation or inflammation that affects the skin of the face – usually in cheek and nose but for severe cases, may also affect the eyes and nose.  The cause of Rosacea is still unknown but there are triggering factors that may cause its redness like alcohol, chocolate, spicy foods, sudden change of temperature and emotional stress.  It is not contagious or infectious.

Most of those who suffer from it are English, Irish and other individual with European race. However, it may also affect other people who are fair-skinned. It usually happens to people at their 30s and 40s and very seldom found in children.

When compared to acne, it has no pimple but rather small pustules.  The skin is dry and sometimes there are dilated blood vessels. But the treatment and care is usually the same. Dermatologist can prescribe antibiotic or anti-inflammatory to ease the patient from swelling of the skin. For worse cases, laser and surgery are most advised. But unlike acne, it does not leave scar.

Emotional effects:

It is not easy to face the problem in the face.  Even a small redness may cause a person to be conscious that people at him.  Severe cases of Rosacea can bring more damage not only to the physical apperace of the patient but also to his emotions. Embarrassment and lesser self-esteem are usually experienced. They feel that people make fun of the redness and swelling of their faces.  There is also anxiety that the condition can be aggravated.  Lastly, a feeling of phobia is possible to those patients who survived the treatment and do not want to experience the same condition again.  If depression is started to be felt, a medical attention is already needed.

When to see a doctor:

If any of the symptoms are found or notice, contact your dermatologist right away so a proper treatment according to the diagnosis is prescribed.  Do not make it worse by self-medicating. The problem is found in the face. If the problem is aggravated, it is really a big problem.
